BENEFITS OF A SUMMER INTERNSHIP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (Blog #62)

What’s your high schooler doing this summer?  Have they thought about a summer internship?

In our blog earlier this week, we explain that even though it is a little late, your student may still be able to secure an internship for this summer.  For those students who want an internship, but didn’t start earlier in the year, they still may be able to nail an internship this summer.  Try reaching out to local small businesses, community service organizations or other entities where your family may have contacts, and inquire about summer work or volunteering with an organization.

Why should your student arrange an internship?  Well, there are lots of benefits to exposing your student to a professional workplace during the summer.

  • Discover what industries or roles genuinely interest (or don't interest) them

  • Build relationships that may open doors to future opportunities

  • Get a foot in the door at organizations they'd like to work for later

  • Demonstrate initiative, maturity, and focus to admissions officers

  • Have concrete, specific examples to discuss in essays and interviews

Personal Growth

  • Build confidence by succeeding in a new environment

  • Develop independence and self-advocacy

  • Learn how to navigate challenges and professional relationships

Potential Earnings

  • Many internships — especially in STEM and business — offer stipends or hourly pay

  • Even unpaid experiences can lead to scholarships or paid opportunities later

  • Inquire with your college about grants/stipends offered by the college for working in public service

The best time to seek an internship can be anytime your high schooler is ready and interested in work summer work experience. Certainly, as early as the summer after sophomore year (10th grade) may prove a beneficial time to explore career interests. Without a doubt, a summer internship helps bridge the gap between school and the professional world, giving students a meaningful head-start on their future.
