I have deep admiration for Vice President Kamala Harris. I admire her integrity, courage, character, hope, and that beautiful, infectious laugh. While it was disappointing that she didn't win the presidential election, growing up I never imagined seeing someone who looked like me in the highest offices of power. When Kamala Harris was elected Vice President, it was more than just a political victory—it was personal. I remember watching her take the oath of office and feeling overwhelming pride and hope. It reinforced my belief that barriers could be broken and that representation matters.
In her concession speech, Vice President Harris urged us to “stay engaged for the sake of freedom and justice and the future.” But what does staying engaged look like? It could mean participating in local elections, volunteering for community initiatives, or advocating for policy changes that align with the values of equity and justice. It’s not just about voting during presidential elections—it’s about fostering civic involvement year-round. By taking these steps, we can carry forward the hope and determination she embodies and make meaningful changes in our neighborhoods and beyond.
Even though I'm older than her, she will always be the role model I wish I had growing up. She brought hope and joy when we needed it most. I hold on to that. Let’s strive to make Vice President Harris proud.
Thank you, my Black sisters, for voting for the woman who continues to inspire me. Her journey has inspired me to stay engaged in my community, advocate for change, and encourage young girls to dream beyond limits.
