WE’RE IN AWE OF KAMALA! (Blog #48)

Updated: Nov 7

By Glenda Augustine and Lisa Wilson Edwards

Growing up as Black women in America, we know firsthand the strength, resilience, and courage it takes to carve out a path in a world that often doesn’t believe in you. Glenda was raised by a Black single mother in Milwaukee, and Lisa by a Black mother and father in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.  Growing up, both of our families had to deal with the early and unfolding realities of living in newly integrated neighborhoods and school environments.  We know about managing inequitable expectations from teachers, professors, and later supervisors, navigating fitting in socially with school-peers and later work-peers, and demanding equal opportunities to succeed in all settings.  Today, Glenda as a mother of four and Lisa as a mother of two see these same challenges that Vice President Kamala Harris has overcome; a woman who has broken barriers and continues to make history. Watching her navigate leadership challenges with grace and determination fills us with hope and pride—not only for ourselves and our daughters and sons in particular, but for everyone.

As we look at Vice President Harris, we see someone who understands the balance of ambition and empathy, a rare political mix. She represents so many of us: women, people of color, children of single mothers, and those who refuse to let the world define our limits.

She encourages us to keep pushing our boundaries and inspires us to speak openly and boldly, for us through 2 Black Moms & A Mic and our podcast knowing our stories matter and can resonate.

When she steps into the role of President, we believe she will lead with compassion, strength, and intelligence. In Kamala Harris, we see a future for our country that acknowledges the richness of our diversity and the depth of our shared struggles and dreams. We hope her story and leadership will continue to inspire all of us to dream bigger, aim higher and do it with joy.
